Improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation and mobility system through ONE Cary integration across systems, streamlined data analytics, Connected Vehicles, and Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPMs)

Why is this important?


Transportation initiatives are regional efforts. These goals of these initiatives are to reduce Traffic related deaths, reduce congestion, improve public safety, create new options of travel and improve the overall citizen experience.

Current State

  • 200 Traffic Signals, 115 CCTV Cameras, 20 DSRC Connect Intersections
  • 110+ Miles of Fiber Optic Cable, IP based communication
  • 480 Miles of Streets
  • Central ATMS software manages all ITS and signal equipment
  • 2 Traffic Management Centers with 12+ staff members for M&O
  • 30 buses with 6 on order, serving 200,000+ trips per year, connecting to 3 regional transit systems
  • Systems that connect these things, sources of data, locations that data is housed

Define benefits being sought from new or expanded set of solutions

   Put the focus on exceptional service for our citizens

  • Improve efficiency along our most congested corridors
  • Reduce crashes and eliminate fatalities for all modes of travel
  • Promote multi-modalism in a suburban environment
  • Develop robust ridership for GoCary Transit
  • Create predictive outcomes through regional integration of traveler data
  • Harness traveler data to improve non-modal Town services
  • Provide more real-time traffic data to third party services (i.e. Waze)
  • Provide real-time situational awareness information to 311, 911 and other departments

Define additional topics (if any) City wants to explore in working group

  • Connected Vehicles – We desire the functionality for our buses to talk to each other, so that other buses would know to layover longer for connections, Transit priority thru traffic system, getting information to drivers thru system, speeding alerts in school zones, etc. (This good one area to focus on as it bridges the Traffic and Transit needs/initiatives together)
  • Big Data – We have tons of data, but we don’t have time for people to look thru all data for issues. Issues include transit drivers speeding, going off route, laying over at stops, number of passengers per vehicle per hour.  Staff may have to look at four hours of data to evaluate performance.
  • ATSPM – Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures/Metrics – Looking at efficacies of system timing. Staff must do corridor runs manually in a vehicle with a GPS system and then review the data and make timing adjustments in the traffic system.
